dc.description Dr. Jerry Lewis, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Kent State University, begins his oral history by discussing his experiences on campus after his arrival in 1966. He describes events and the general atmosphere during these years leading up to the May 4, 1970, shootings on campus and talks about the Black United Students (BUS), the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), protests that took place, the University administration’s response, and the formation of the faculty marshals. An eyewitness to the shootings, he goes on to describe his experiences and observations from the days surrounding the shootings. He talks about his experiences as a faculty marshal, his role as a media contact for the University, and his interviews with the FBI. Dr. Lewis also discusses the aftermath of the shootings and his experiences and activities in the months and years that followed, including enabling his students to complete their spring 1970 coursework, events that took place during the summer of 1970, his experiences with writing about the shootings and being asked to contribute his research on the events, and his interview with James Michener. He also discusses the Scranton Report, the establishment of the Candlelight Vigil as part of the annual commemmoration events, and the audio tape of the shootings made by Terry Strubbe. He concludes with discussing his and his co-authors’ efforts in submitting an application for and succeeding in having the site of the shootings added to the National Register of Historic Places.
