| Description: | Understanding the variation in bioaerosol concentrations is important when estimating the health effects of these aeroallergens. This study was conducted to develop a better understanding of exposure to bioaerosols, by determining the variations of their concentrations between and within homes. Information on this variation is important when planning exposure assessment strategies. In this study sampling was performed for a 24 hour time periods on five consecutive days in four Cincinnati area homes. The samples were simultaneously taken in four different rooms inside each home and at four different locations outside the home using a Button Inhalable Aerosol Sampler. The homes were free of visible mold contamination or water damage. The relative sizes of between-home and within-home variation sources were expressed as intraclass correlations (ICC) by calculating the proportion of each type of variability compared to total variability. The results from this study results suggests that if long-term sampling methods are employed for characterizing bioaerosol exposure for a population, the sampling should be repeated in a larger number of homes, instead of conducting replicate sampling in a smaller number of homes. |
