Description:	This study sought to replicate the finding that adolescents with BPD have facial affect processing deficits and extended this line of inquiry to aural emotional processing (i.e., the ability to decode emotion expression from the speaker’s voice quality). Because Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has a high comorbidity with BPD (60-80% of children and adolescents with BPD also have ADHD), we contrasted the visual and aural recognition of emotion of five adolescents with BPD and no comorbid ADHD with nine adolescents who have ADHD alone and twelve who were psychiatrically healthy. The participants completed tasks of facial and vocal affect recognition, social functioning, and non-emotion based facial recognition. These pilot data revealed that adolescents with BPD may be deficient in vocal affect recognition. Our results suggest that those with BPD have more impoverished social skills, and that this difficulty is independent of the comorbid ADHD that many of these patients demonstrate.
