Title: USE OF THE WECHSLER ABBREVIATED SCALE OF INTELLIGENCE IN A VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION SAMPLE
Author: Meyer, Mary
Description: The demands of research protocols and managed care environments have imposed time constraints on psychological testing resulting in efforts to develop abbreviated forms of well established psychometric measures. Short forms derived from the Wechsler tests are often selected because of the standardization, reliability and body of research accruing to the “parent” instrument. The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) was developed to meet the demand for a short measure of intelligence when the administration of the full version of the WAIS-III can be overly taxing for patients with disabilities. The WASI was developed as an "independent scale" but it amounts to being a standardized, normed, and validated “short form” of both the WISC-III and the WAIS-III. Individuals with physical and psychiatric disabilities were excluded from the standardization sample. In the current study, the relationship between the WASI and two of the most widely used instruments in vocational assessment situations, the Wide Range Achievement Test–3 (WRAT-3) and the Career Abilities Placement Survey (CAPS) was examined to evaluate the validity of the WASI as an independent measure. One hundred and twenty individuals who were referred by the Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR) participated in the study. Findings from this study will facilitate choosing measures of cognitive functioning in the assessment of disabled persons. The results indicate that the WASI bears a similar relationship to the WRAT-3 and the CAPS as other full versions of Wechsler Intelligence scales in a disabled population. In addition, the two-subtest version of the WASI is highly correlated with the full version in this population.
