| Title: | RACE AND GENDER AS MEDIATORS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING STYLES |
| Author: | TIPKEMPER, JESSICA M |
| Description: | Recent criticisms of public speaking instruction question whether the current standard is appropriate for all students. Specifically, critics charge that public speaking instruction is sexist and ethnocentric, requiring revision. In an attempt to pursue a perspective of ethnorelativism and in response to these concerns, this study examined public speaking styles demonstrated by students who had not yet participated in a college-level introductory public speaking course. Content analysis was performed to assess the presence or absence of the dimensions of evidence, organization, purpose, reasoning, presence of hierarchy, and emphasis in speeches given by participants. Findings suggested few differences between males and females. However, significant differences were found to exist between Blacks and Whites. Future research should examine other demographic groups, control for unobserved variables such as speech topic and audience composition, and refine measurement techniques. |
