Title: Data Collection Network and Data Analysis for the Prototype Local Area Augmentation System Ground Facility
Author: Vuyyuru, Sisir
Description: A data collection network has been designed and implemented for the prototype Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) Ground Facility (LGF) at Ohio University. The LGF broadcasts corrections for Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to aircraft to increase their accuracy and safety during precision approach and landing operations. To analyze LGF performance, data are collected from multiple GPS receiver/antenna combinations and stored for post-processing. To collect the data, GPS receivers are interfaced with micro-controllers. These micro-controllers are programmed in Dynamic C to encapsulate the binary data output by the GPS receivers into TCP/IP headers. These data are sent to the LGF from the micro-controller through 802.11b wireless routers. At the LGF, the data are received and stored in binary-formatted files using a Java-coded receiver program. One of the data analysis steps consists of the characterization of local ionospheric anomalies. Both single frequency and dual frequency GPS measurement data are used to determine the magnitude of higher-order ionospheric propagation delay variations during periods of time with significant ionospheric activity.
