Title: Witch's Brew
Author: Mazzer, Mary Elizabeth, Ms.
Description: Mazzer, Mary, M.F.A., May, 2008 Art Witch's Brew (33 pp.) Director of Thesis: Gianna Commito My MFA thesis exhibit consists of a series of assemblages that can be read as painting and sculpture simultaneously. The inspiration for the assemblages comes from my fascination with rituals of ornamentation. I view my assemblages as references to cultural fetish objects, which are derivative of folk and outsider art. My process of making work relates to a ritual of ornamentation; a meditative ceremony of labor which yields an art object that is infused with a symbolic narrative. The underlying narrative of my work is based on my personal history and my Mid-western perspective. I have attempted to reference the non-cosmopolitan aspects of my environment by my use of common, inexpensive, and found materials. Many of my pieces have a quality of vulnerability and playfulness, which creates a conflicted sense of fantasy and escapism. The title of my thesis project is Witch's Brew, which I respond to as an apt metaphor highlighting the interwoven themes of my work. Witches are representative of strong, feminine archetypes as well as outsiders. The title also references folklore and some fantastical elements. The idea of a witch's brew, a blend of disparate ingredients empowered through ritual or ceremony to become a fortified amalgam, has similarities to my processes and my juxtapositions of various materials, which combine to exist as autonomous art objects.
