dc.description Hypertension is a polygenic disorder where many genes control expression of blood pressure (BP). A large portion of cases are salt-sensitive. Finding genes controlling BP will yield insight into the pathophysiology of hypertension. Interval mapping in the Dahl rat model of salt-sensitive hypertension allows control of genetic and environmental factors affecting BP expression and location of novel BP quantitative trait loci (QTL), genomic regions containing genes regulating BP. Substitution mapping with congenic strains and substrains achieves QTL boundary reduction. Analysis of gene expression data from kidneys of S rats and congenic rats allows selection of BP candidate genes; two such studies are presented. The first is after 28 days of an elevated dietary salt intake. The second is after 24 hours wherein half the rats had an elevated dietary salt intake. Candidate genes identified by both studies include Dnajc5, Edn3, Pol3rk, Psma7, and Rtel1. en_US
