Description:	The purpose of this study was to examine the effects, in the first 6 months of caring, of emotional support and physical help on the health of first-time caregivers of persons with stroke. This study was a secondary analysis of data collected during baseline, 3-month, and 6-month telephone interviews for a large NIH study. Only the control group for the NIH study was used (n = 40) and a descriptive-correlational designwas employed. The data were analyzed using non-parametric statistics. Caregivers' perceived health and their receipt of emotional support and physical help did not change significantly over time. A significant, positive relationship was found to exist between emotional support and caregiver health at 6 months. Nurses can help preserve the stability of caregivers’ health during the initial 6 months of caring and beyond by assisting them to establish and maintain an accessible network of emotional and physical support from family, friends, and formal services.
