The "Lake Erie" was a wooden Canadian steamer built at St. Catherines, Ontario in 1873 by Melancthon Simpson. She ran the Chicago-Collingwood route. She and the "Northern Queen" were enroute from Chicago to Collingwood, Ontario when they were overtaken by a fierce snow storm. The vessels collided and the "Lake Erie" sank within minutes off Poverty Island on Lake Michigan on November 24, 1881. Although badly damaged, the "Northern Queen" reached Manistee, Michigan where she foundered at the harbor entrance. |
