| Title: | THE CONSERVATION VALUE OF A HEDGEROW FOR BIRDS IN AN AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE IN SOUTHWEST OHIO |
| Author: | Richards, Julie Whipkey |
| Description: | The objective of this study was to determine the conservation value of a hedgerow for birds in southwest Ohio. Specifically, the importance of hedgerows to birds was explained at two spatial scales: the hedgerow level and the landscape level. In addition, the use of hedgerows as habitat and movement corridors was investigated. Finally, this study considered the effect of the edge between a woodlot and a hedgerow on the composition of bird species. I surveyed bird populations and vegetation composition in two types of hedgerows: those that provided connectivity to other wooded habitats and those that did not. I also quantified structural characteristics of the hedgerows as well as characteristics of the landscape surrounding the study sites. I determined that, in general, bird species richness is affected by structural characteristics of the hedgerow, but not vegetation composition; richness is also affected by the amount and types of wooded habitat in the surrounding landscape. I also determined that different bird species use hedgerows differently. |
