Title: La estructura lingüística del paréntesis en conversación informal: La conexión entre el contexto conversacional y el contexto situacional
Author: Norgard, Christine A.
Description: This study examines the use of a linguistic structure related to both interruptions and topic change in informal Spanish conversation. Upon analyzing conversations recorded during lunch and dinner gatherings in Valencia, Spain in July 2006, the data reflected the repeated presence of moments in which the conversational context (topics of conversation) and the conversational situation (location of conversation, actions of participants while conversing) connect briefly. This structure, called “parenthesis,” manifests itself in four distinct structural variations depending on whether a topic and/or speaker change occurs immediately before and after the structure. Parentheses are used to carry out four distinct functions in conversation. It is found that the intersection of conversational and situational contexts (the moment of the parenthesis) occurs when one participant expresses an immediate physical, mental, emotional or social need. The concept of immediacy explains the use of parenthesis to express this need in a given moment during conversation.
