Description: As a result of the “dot com” downfall in the early 2000’s, companies are more wary when it comes to committing resources to Web-Based Electronic Commerce (WEC) projects, because of changing and turbulent environments, and market uncertainties (Microsoft Corporation, 2002). Despite the challenges, the outlook for WEC appears promising. In fact, recent studies suggest that the volume of goods and services exchanged through WEC will continue to grow into the trillions of dollars worldwide (e.g., IDC, 2004). Before embarking on WEC projects, companies need to assess how it can be used to seamlessly integrate processes internally and externally. It is recognized that these technologies demand an increased interdependence and coordination among firms along the supply chain (Clark and Lee, 2000) in hope of improved benefits along the supply chain. In order to overcome the challenges posed by WEC, research must identify the factors that lead to organizational benefits in the context of WEC and furthermore determine its likely impact on organizations. Through an extensive review of the extant literature, this study proposes a research model that investigates the factors that affect organizational benefits in the context of WEC usage and its impacts on the firm. A large scale online survey was conducted and a total of 180 responses were obtained and subjected through rigorous statistical methods to validate the constructs considered in the study. Using multiple hierarchical regression analysis, the model was tested. In addition to validating the positive impact of WEC usage on the organizational benefits of the firm, this study finds statistical support of other organizational factors as well as some interaction effects. This study also developed valid and reliable measures to capture a series of factors that should be valuable for further studying WEC use and its organizational impact. Guidelines for future research are also mentioned.
