dc.description Lake Bosumtwi occupies a 1.07 Ma impact crater in Ghana, West Africa. The hydrologically-closed lake fluctuates due to variations in precipitation and evaporation driven by changes in strength of the North African monsoon. Prior studies on short (10 m long) sediment cores have shown that Lake Bosumtwi sediments contain a detailed record of climatic alterations over the last 26 ky. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the International Continental Drilling Project, a team of scientists obtained long sediment drill cores from the lake in the summer of 2004. The 1 Ma history of the lake was recovered by drilling in the crater’s annular moat to recover 291 m of lacustrine sediment. By measuring the magnetic hysteresis properties of the cores, this research has extended the sedimentary magnetic record of West African climate change allowing the identification of interglacial and glacial cycles for the lake’s entire 1 Ma history. en_US
