Title: Circles of Women: Healing Through Mandalas and Community
Author: Slattery, HM, Mary
Description: This thesis project came about because of my own experience with and reverence for the art form of mandalas combined with my belief in the healing power of supportive communities of women. I was convinced that a communal opportunity of creating mandalas would deepen an individual's self-awareness which can only enhance any group experience. An invitation was presented to three groups of women who know some level of marginalization in our society. These women were all members of existing, larger groups which had already intentionally come together for support. All three groups were guided through five original mandala-making experiences adapted from basic art therapy techniques. These centering, prayerful experiences were embraced by all who participated. The result was that each group was changed. Within them, new alliances were created and existing relationships were strengthened.
