| Title: | COMPARATIVE ANALYSES OF TWO OF ARNOLD SCHOENBERG'S ATONAL WORKS: PIANO PIECES, OP. 1/1 AND SIX LITTLE PIANO PIECES, OP 19/2 |
| Author: | KIM, YOOJIN |
| Description: | This thesis discusses the various analytical approaches applied to Arnold Schoenberg's (1874-1951) atonal works. Chapter One gives a brief historical perspective on Schoenberg's music and presents the problems in analyzing his early atonal works. Chapter Two introduces the various analytical approaches used to interpret Schoenberg's two atonal pieces: Piano Pieces, Op. 11, No. 1 and Six Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19, No. 2. The different methods, such as Schenkerian theory applied to post-tonal music, set theory, scale-degree analysis, rhythmic analysis, etc., are reviewed. Chapter Three compares each interpretation used by theorists, and shows my analysis of two pieces, based on the notion of ‘developing variation,' in which I draw a relationship between the two pieces. The thesis concludes with which analysis best reflects Schoenberg's musical notion beyond the timeframes, and helps listeners understand the composer's intended sound. |
