| Title: | SYSTEM LEVEL EFFECTIVENESS METRICS FOR PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTICS |
| Author: | MUTHIAH, KANTHI MATHI NATHAN |
| Description: | Globalization is posing several challenges to manufacturing and service industry. Organizations develop new technology and adopt new paradigms to improve system productivity, but the importance of quantifying the impact of technology innovation is overlooked. Since one cannot improve what one cannot measure, performance metrics become a prerequisite to achieve organizational excellence. The extensive literature review shows that quantitative metrics to measure performance at system level are lacking. A quantitative method to perform system level diagnostics (identifying bottleneck, opportunities for improvement) is lacking. The objective of system performance monitoring and diagnostics is to measure system productivity quantitatively and to reveal hidden capacity/identify bottleneck and there by identify opportunities for improvement quantitatively. The performance metrics developed are diagnostic in nature, i.e., apart from measuring performance the metrics indicate the component of the system constraining the performance. The suite of metrics and methodology developed are validated. Overall Throughput Effectiveness (OTE) is used to measure productivity and perform diagnostics for capacity constrained systems predominantly manufacturing. Overall Cycletime Effectiveness (OCE) is used for cycle time/waiting time reduction. Waiting times are critical in service systems like health care services. Hence OCE is predominantly used for performance monitoring and diagnostics of such service systems. A wafer fab case study illustrates the application of OTE to manufacturing systems. A case study performed at Cincinnati children's hospital outpatient pharmacy illustrates the application of OCE to service systems. |
