Title: Oxidation Behavior of Nb-Si-Ti-Cr-Al-X Based Multi-Component Alloys
Author: XU, MENGYAO
Description: Four series, eleven different component Nb-Ti-Si-Cr-Al-X alloys have been exposed in air at temperatures ranging from 1200oF (~648oC) to 1800oF (~982oC) for various time durations. The sequences of reactions that occur upon oxidizing these alloys have been systematically studied. The oxidation of the samples has been monitored by weight gain technique and measuring thickness of the oxide film and the characterization of the oxide layer as well of base materials was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffractometery (XRD) and x-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS). The morphology of the oxide layer, formation of various oxides and the ingress of oxygen into the base materials have been studied as a function of time and temperature. The role of different alloying elements in the formation of the oxide layer has been examined and a possible mechanism of the oxidation has been proposed. The results have established the following.
