dc.description Fr. Carrell, a native of Philadelphia, entered the Society of Jesus at White Marsh, Maryland, in 1820, at the age of seventeen. After two years he returned to his family, entered a seminary and was ordained in 1829. Six years later he again entered the Society of Jesus, this time at Florissant, MO. After his novitiate and several years of pastoral and professional work at St. Louis University, he became President of that institution in 1843. During his presidency at St. Xavier he was appointed Bishop of Covington. He died September 25, 1863. --Anonymous Alumnus, The Xavier Athenaeum, February 1916
