Description: A native of East Flanders, Father Maurice Oakley came to America at the invitation of the famous Jesuit Missionary Father De Smet and entered the novitiate at Florissant February 2, 1835, at the age of 21. He was ordained in 1842 and the next year was appointed Rector of St. Charles College, Grand Coteau, LA. From 1846 to 1856 he was engaged in teaching. After leaving Cincinnati he spent four years at St. Charles, MO., and the rest of his life was devoted to parochial work in Chicago, where he died August 9, 1887. --Anonymous Alumnus, The Xavier Athenaeum, April 1916
