Description: The "Abele" was built as a net tender for the U.S. Navy at New Bern, North Carolina in 1943. Known as "YN-77" and "AN-58," she was assigned to the Pacific Fleet June 2, 1944. She tended nets during the invasion of Iwo Jima. She also took part in the invasion of Okinawa and assisted in shooting down several Japanese planes. She was decommissioned on March 1, 1946 and transferred to the U.S. Maritime Commission on May 7, 1947. In 1947, she was sold to the Great Lakes Lumber and Shipping Company of Fort William, Ontario. She then became known as the "Abele." In 1954, under new ownership, her name was changed to "Superior Straits." She was taken to Vancouver, British Columbia.
