Title: | Letter transmitting Order from War Department for the commemoration of the 19th day of April at the funeral of Abraham Lincoln, late president, of the United States |
Author: | Stone, Henry Lane |
Description: | Letter from Henry Stone, dated April 19, 1865, to the head of the 100th U.S. Colored Infantry, transmitting the order concerning observances on the day of Lincoln's funeral. Lt. Col. Stone adds (in the third person) that "[t]he natural feeling of every soldier will dictate to him the most becoming way of commemorating this sad event. He however recommends to the men that they remain quietly at their quarters, and abstain from all noise, and sport. Their best friend -- the man who has done more than all others to raise them from chattles [sic] to men -- from Slavery to freedom -- has gone. Let them not desecrate the day of this funeral by any impropriety." |
